Who are we and what do we do
NaturePlan is the South of Tyne and Wear Local Nature Recovery Strategy: one of a new, England-wide network of regional strategies aiming to restore nature, combat climate change, and benefit our community.
Work on NaturePlan is led by Gateshead Council in partnership with South Tyneside Council, Sunderland City Council, and Natural England. Gateshead Council is the Data Controller for NaturePlan.
This privacy notice provides specific information about how we process your personal data. It is an addition to the information contained in Gateshead Council's Corporate privacy notice.
What type of information is collected about you
We collect personal information to understand your needs and provide services. Information may include:
- name
- address
- email address
- telephone number
- business ownership
- property ownership
There is no requirement for or need to use sensitive personal data, otherwise known as 'special category' data.
How your information is collected
NaturePlan may collect information about you in a number of ways, including:
- Contact details (name, email address, address) you have provided for use through the website contact form, or any information you provide by email to the lnrs@gateshead.gov.uk mailbox.
- Contact details (name, email address, address) submitted through our consultation partners Urban Intelligence.
- Your contact details are held on the NaturePlan consultation database, which is hosted on secure Gateshead Council servers.
The purpose of collecting this information
The personal data we collect will be used for the following purposes:
- Understanding the potential for nature recovery within the area;
- To form part of the evidence base used to inform NaturePlan;
- To ensure responses to consultations are not duplicated; and
- To ensure responses are genuine.
The lawful basis on which we use this information
The lawful basis for processing this information associated with NaturePlan is that it is a public task; as the councils have a duty to prepare a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (NaturePlan) under the Environment Act 2021.
There is no requirement for or need to use sensitive personal data, otherwise known as 'special category' data.
Who your information may be shared with
We will share your information with:
- Urban Intelligence Ltd, a contracted data processor consultancy assisting the councils with the NaturePlan questionnaire.
Internally within Gateshead Council, your information may be shared with any person with a need to access your data relating to or responding to you raise any complaint
Your information may also be shared with South Tyneside or Sunderland City Councils if you contact us about a specific issue within their local authority area.

How long we will keep your information
We keep your information for as long as we need to provide services to you. We may also need to keep your information in accordance with legal or other obligations. Where we have no need to keep your data it will be securely destroyed. We keep a Record of Processing Activity (a requirement under the GDPR).
